We had the three-day free “TB Caravan” for the residents of Helping Land, Aroma, and Happy Land in Tondo, Manila. This event in coordination with the our local government happened last June 6 up to 9, 2016 at the covered court of Barangay 105, Tondo, Manila.
But before the actual event, a week before, some of our community volunteers conducted a house to house survey for the possible patients who have TB or Tuberculosis.
Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by a bacteria that commonly affects the lungs.
According to the World Health Organization (Western Pacific Region), TB is a major health problem in the Philippines. Although this is curable and preventable, this is considered as the sixth leading cause of death and illness in our country. The high risk groups of TB are mostly the elderly, smokers and the urban poor among others.
Aside from focusing on children’s education, Project PEARLS also aims to bring much needed medical services to the poor communities of our country and that include Helping Land, Happy Land and Aroma in Tondo, Manila. As we know, said areas really belong to the poorest of the poor, and even probably the dirtiest and most slum community of Manila.
Through this caravan, we will be able to screen and to treat possible TB patients.
First part was the registration.
After that, residents were assisted to the X-ray area for the X-ray Screening.
While the residents were waiting for the result, health personnel conducted a seminar. They discussed Tuberculosis, its signs and symptoms, treatments and other relevant topics.
When the results of their x-ray were out, patients that got negative results may already go home. And to those who got positive proceeded to the Sputum test.
They will get to know the result of this test after a week. Manila Health Department will give medical assistance to those who will get positive results.
